Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
